“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” Story Kit

Introducing the “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” Story book kit! This kit is designed to help children who are blind or visually impaired fully understand the story. The kit includes real objects related to the story. You have a mouse, straw, cup, and other things relevant to the story.

Although the kit is made specifically for blind and visually impaired children it is also made with inclusion in mind. My dream when making this kit is to see the blind, visually impaired, and sighted children working together. The children can act out the story with the objects included in the box. The items in the box also lend themselves to improving skills in areas other than vision. For example, OT skills, when the child is to take a small piece of tape from the tape dispenser to put the picture on the refrigerator. The box can serve as the refrigerator. When the child opens the straw (there are several straws in the box) that needs a pincher grip, and when they are making their own picture with crayons and a little pad of paper also in the box.

Some of the vision skills aside from tactile discrimination by telling the difference between the six artificial cookies that are included in the box, would be figure ground when looking for the item that the story is Speaking of And spatial awareness when the student is putting all the items back in the box and closes the box. Let me tell you this is not an easy task.

This story kit can be used repeatedly as the child grows it lends itself to sorting, color identification, matching, size comparison and so much more on the basic level. Higher level thinking skills would include things like how is that little mouse going to drink out of that big cup? Or how is that mouse going to get up high enough on the refrigerator to tape his picture?
